Happiness: Happiness Seen Through The 3 Aspects Of Love

Happiness: Happiness Seen Through The 3 Aspects Of Love

Happiness, the feeling of showing pleasure or contentment. The search eternal happiness is a life long journey. People will spend hours of their time and thousands of their dollars to try and find love or joy in their lives. For some, the quest for love is easy, it almost finds them, whereas others will live their whole life uncontent and unloved. This journey for love has been the topic for many artists whether it be movie, music or art itself. It is not just the artists that search for this love and happiness either, but philosophers and really everybody spend their whole life trying to find this. People think of iconic phrases like, all you need is love, money can’t buy happiness, and love is all around but in actuality in order to be truly happy with your life and find the most meaningful kind of love a person needs to find a balance between their spiritual love, their emotional understanding of love and their physical connection to love. Therefore true happiness can be achieved through all the previously said aspects of love.

In this picture we see that the man has achieved happiness through the facial expression and general composition of the photograph. Through the absence of colour, the way the photographer zooms into the mans face, the man's facial expression we see that even though the rough state of his beard, the deep wrinkles, and the matted length of his hair makes him look as though he has lived some sort of rough life. However, the evidence of a rough does not stop the man from feeling truly happy. It could be said then that this happiness has been brought on by achieving the three layers of love: spiritual, emotional, physical.
In this photo we see the photographer expressing the spiritual aspect of love. Through the symbolism of putting the flower in the barrel of the gun it shows the woman acceptance of her spiritual love. She uses the flower as a symbol of happiness, innocence and nature to pass her love unto others that do not share those same values. Using the absence of colour in the picture the divide everything into opposites. For example the black and the white is an example of the love and the hate. By using the rule of thirds rule of composition the photographer enhances the message that one person can make a difference because the woman’s face is put into greater focus by having it on a intersection of the rule of thirds line. In conclusion we see that the photographer is the woman and other elements to express the spiritual aspect of love.

In this picture we are shown the emotional aspect of love. Through the depth of field the photographer used in the picture we see that nothing else matters but what is in focus; the focal point just happens to be the two people kissing. The parts of the image that are not in focus suggests that all the chaos and the fighting doesn’t matter at that point since the couple is so preoccupied by their emotional state.  All the photographer wants the viewer to pay attention to is the couple and their emotional love that is so strong that the rest of the world stop spinning for that moment. The lighting in this photo also emphasizes the couple kissing because it is brightest around them and as it dulls out the picture seems to get out of focus. This just enhances the fact that nothing else matters except this emotionally loving moment. In conclusion through the elements of lighting and the depth of field, they enhance the emotional aspect of love that these two people are sharing.
The image by Kadir Nelson used in the popular children's story, Salt In His Shoes, the artist highlights the protagonist of the story by placing the subject in the centre surrounded by negative space. The subject is drawn in such a way that it highlights his athletic ability while the upward angle toward the subject face shows his aspiration to be great. This picture shows the physical aspect of love through the context of what is happening in the story at this moment. What had happened was the protagonist lost the previous game at the park with his older brothers and the big kids as you can see in the picture the boy behind him has a slightly larger build. After displaying his physical love for the game he practiced everyday went back to the park and won the next game with the older kids. This is the physical aspect of love because the story doesn’t end there the protagonist is actually Michael Jordan and his physical love for the game of basketball lead to his happiness later down the line as an adult.
The journey for love and happiness can be a long road, however it can also be achieved. Many believe that they can be truly happy if they can acquire one aspect of love whether it be emotional, physical, or spiritual.  However, after looking at the first image of the old man it just shows that it not only can be one aspect but a combination of the three. Therefore true happiness when an individual finds a balance between emotional, physical and spiritual love.

racism

It was decades ago when the world was dealing with racism in such a public way, where everyone knew that these battles for equality were going on.  Today, society tries to convince the public that racism is a thing of the past, and that attitudes and violence towards different races has nothing to do with being raciest, more so that it is only a problem with certain individuals.  How naive does society look?  The issues that make up the news stories every night are not problems between individuals, but problems with racism.  Racism has not left our society, it is very strong, but it is handled in a way to make it look like this decade old problem is under control. This ignorant acceptance of the issues is demonstrated in the control of media to convince people that racism is a thing of the past, the treatment of the Ferguson killing, and the treatment of people willing to speak up and protest about today's racism reality.  Society needs to stop turning a blind eye to the real issues and pretending that nothing is wrong;  racism is all too real and present in society and real punishments need to be given if society ever hopes to gain true equality between all people.

The image below reflects now racism was handled in the past.  This clear segregation and racist behaviour was front and center in the media and many people were convinced that this was the way to handle race situations.  These images are from decades ago, and are looked upon as outrageous and ridiculous by society, as they think back wondering, “how were we ever so discriminatory to others?”  The reality is, society hasn't moved past this way of thinking, it just isn't as obvious in the media and community.  The image is set up so that the clear divide between races is highlighted as well as the treatment and station of each race.  This is demonstrated by the water fountains on either end of the picture frame, making sure they aren't too close together, and the quality of water fountain for the “white” people verses the “black” people.
Today, society tries to hide racism and cover up the stories and the attitude so that people believe that discrimination is over and equality has been reached.  The below political cartoon demonstrates how the government and media makers are trying to convince society that everything is much better today and that racism is over.  However, the bottom part of the cartoon shows how evil can “rear it's ugly head” and that society cannot keep the truth concealed forever.  This is shown by ‘racist problems  and people” popping out of the water, suggesting that racism is always under the surface of the issues and cannot be kept under wraps.

The image below shows 3 significant symbols to demonstrate how society  has come together to stand up for what they feel is just unjust. Theses unjust practices of police brutality and racism  has lead those in Ferguson, Missouri,  to fear life in their own community more so than simply living their life and dying of old age. The Ferguson trial is about the unjust murder  of a young boy named Michael Brown, who was shot by a white cop after signaling  his surrender to authority by putting his hands up, this explains  why the subjects in the photo below all have their hands up. The hands up with an open palm symbolizes surrender, the look of obeying what's being told, given  instructions by  officers. This act of surrender gives the police no reason to  take brutal actions towards  young, black males walking the streets of  Ferguson, Missouri. The closed fist, by the man in the center of the image, is an iconic symbol used back in the 60’s as a way to demonstrate power,  more specifically, power that a group of  people can create. Lastly, the signs the subjects in the image hold represents the peace society wants, and what they want the police to see.  These signs demonstrate where their thought process is when it comes to their comfort in the community. The sign “AM I NEXT?” really stood out because it displays fear, and the acknowledgement  of the unfortunate loss that took place with Brown and might take place again any day, even tomorrow. These signs not only show fear but they show frustration as well, Ferguson, Missouri, is getting treatment they do not want  and it is sad that this treatment never seems to end or be acknowledged.

Lastly, the image below highlights the peaceful nature of protests and how the police often escalate the situation to a level of violence.  Often, protests are groups of people marching  together, holding signs and shouting their concerns.  As shown in the image below, protests are often peaceful and used to show society of the real issues.   An unarmed young man attempting to hold together a chain of people to  positively fight against the officers  that are trying to negatively  instigate the situation  is shown in the foreground, and is clearly in focus, telling the viewer that they are the real subjects of the image and should be focused on.  The background shows the police in all of their riot gear, packed together, ready to fight.  The police are blurry which suggests that the individuals don’t matter, but instead they are a symbol of power and control.  What makes the police more interesting is that they are all white males.  This enhances the photographer’s message of racism and police brutality.
http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture/2014/08/police_brutality_toward_black_and_brown_youths_reflects_disregard_for_their.html

In conclusion, till this day the world’s approach to racism is abolished but in fact it’s truly not; it is  still around and as strong as ever. It is handled in a way to make it look like this decade old problem is under control. This ignorant acceptance of the issues is demonstrated in the control of media to convince people that racism is a thing of the past, the way the Ferguson killing was handled and is still being looked at, and the way police brutality control individuals that are peacefully trying to make a difference in a world covered in racism.  If society wants to truly end racism and make this issue a problem of the past, then stronger punishments and truthful media coverage needs to start being implemented.  Racism is a problem that cannot be extinguished until the people creating it are silenced and convinced that they are only creating a problem, instead of solving one.

Judgement: An Everyday Obsticle

We are all guilty of it. It could be a stranger you passed on the street, someone you have walked by in the hall, or even an instagram picture you saw the other day. As soon as we lay eyes on another human being, whether you mean to or not, we judge them. Their clothes, their hair colour, their makeup, or their weight. Not only have we been guilty of it, we have all been, or will be, victim of it. It is a pessimistic reality that today’s society will construct a judgement of someone based on a notorious stereotype. What makes the difference is if you decide to look past what you see at first glance and appreciate a person’s inner beauty. There is so much more to a person than what they look like and many times that idea is abandoned, but the upcoming images will demonstrate the importance of admiring someone for who they really are.

This image shows first a man who has many tattoos, wearing a cut of t-shirt and worn out jeans. Many people in today’s society would take one look at this man and categorize him as being intimidating, a rebel and someone who doesn’t necessarily have their life together. But then you look at the next half of the picture to see the same man dressed as a doctor with his tattoos covered by the sophisticated doctor apparel. Now when we look at this man, bearing the same expression, what first comes to our mind is no longer negative thoughts. He would now be considered an educated, trustworthy person. What you should take into consideration is that the persona displayed on the left half of the picture could really be a kind, big-hearted man and the one on the right, a delinquent. Whether he portrays any of these traits, as a society we should learn to depart from making assumptions of other people such as the man in this image.

These next two images are very similar and both acknowledge the idea that what is presented on a person’s exterior, may not reflect who they really are. On the left half of the first picture we see a young girl who appears to be innocent, beside a man that gives off an unwelcoming vibe. The right hand side of this image shows what each person is hiding behind their back. The girl who you thought was innocent is actually bearing an ax which represents her beastly personality. Contradictory to this, the man you would have thought to be frightening, is holding a bouquet of flowers representing his gentle, loving nature. Similar to this image the next one also deals with the intimidating man vs. innocent little girl theme. What is interesting about this image is the choice of using their shadows to demonstrate the idea that who they really are is far from what they are perceived to be based on how they look. These images perfectly represent the importance of looking past a first judgement and venturing to determine a person’s true identity.

This is a powerful picture because it deals with real people who are affected by stereotypes generated by their appearance. The concept of the signs is so that each person can get their point across effectively because they would not always have the chance to do so. Why wouldn't there be a chance for them to be heard? Simply because a judgement would be emplaced upon them before they could express themselves. Most people today have been impacted immensely by stereotypes. It happens so much that we don’t even realize that thats exactly what they are - stereotypes! A stereotype is a generalized idea that doesn’t fairly represent an individual. Unfortunately we will all be grouped into categories that we may not belong in. But, in order to demolish these false identities, we ourselves can see others for who they really are and get the same in return. In other words, pursuing the concept of “not judging a book by its cover” is important because it will reflect not only how other people are being perceived but also how others will perceive us.

To conclude, it is a pessimistic reality that today’s society will construct a judgement of someone based on a notorious stereotype. What makes the difference is if you decide to look past what you see at first glance and appreciate a person’s inner beauty.

Robots: Real life Vs. Science Fiction

We've all read about and seen on television different robots with different jobs and different abilities, their main purpose being machines who help us with our everyday life. Now today we can look around and think that having a functioning robot is a far away dream that may never happen in our life time, but surprisingly there are a great number of functioning robots that are being used today that would make a number of science fiction books look like a thing from the past. From delivering items to reminding someone of an appointment and even reading a child a bedtime story, robots are beginning to appear all around the world. As the current computer robotics industries grow there is a lot of speculation as to whether are not these current robots are to be taken seriously. Many people out there are calling these robots 'servants', but to serve is not what many of the them are designed to do. Most are designed to interact with us, some doing it very well. The real question behind these robots is why are they being created to serve mentally rather than physically as we always thought? Are we as a society so dependent on technology that creating a artificial intelligence to connect and interact with us is the next stage for our social conduct? Are we using the term 'robot' as an excuse to build new technologies that make us think like we are being productively social simply because we aren't looking at a phone or computer screen.

Now I know personally that when
I think the word 'robot' an image of
something that resembles a human comes to mind, something that runs errands and helps around the house. When it comes to current robots who can do these sort of jobs we are very limited in the technology, but that does not mean that there is nothing in that field. This first robot here is called an A.L.O Botlr and he is a hotel concierge. One of it's biggest jobs at the Aloft Hotel in California is to help with delivering items to guests in their rooms. At 3-feet tall, 100 pounds on wheels this Botlr has a 7 inch tablet that lets people interact with it. Along with 4G and Wifi, this concierge has a built in 3D camera that lets it move around the hotel efficiently on it's own. This is the kind of robot that many would come to use the word 'servant' for thinking that using this machine as something that we don't need as a society, and when it comes to robots as simple as this one it is really is a personal opinion on today's technology. They are not much like the scientific dream we have, but it is a start.

Unlike in the physical uses for today's robots we are much further ahead in computer robotics that focus more around a person mentally. Communicating through voices, faces and gestures we recognize, there is a far wider range of robots who are capable of having a conversation with you rather then going to pick up your dry-cleaning. There is already a small market for these types of robots. And that is why I would like you to meet Jibo. Jibo has been introduced as the world's first family robot.

Jibo is a small robot that is meant to be talked to. He has his own voice and his own personality. Jibo is one of the very first of his kind as he can see, hear, speak, help, learn and relate to a person. Now these all can seem frighteningly like human characteristics, and that is how he is meant to be programmed. He has a very unique social aspect to him. With many more like him more suited towards being social around us, it leaves many in wonder of how these robots are going to develop through out the next up coming years, and how it's social abilities are going to change. My question is are these changes going to be for the better? Is this going to be like when the first iPhone was released? Are these and others like Jibo now going to be a part of people's home on a regular basis.

We humans as a society have already proclaimed that the technology of today is taking away from the very means that we use to socialize with each other. We would rather be looking down at a screen then face to face with another person. These new advancements to robotics are seen as the new step forward towards machines that can help our daily lives. But unlike in science fiction, are these real life robots about to become a fake way for us to think that we are being productively social simply because we aren't looking at a phone or computer screen. Is that to the ways life is or is all of this nothing more than the plot of another sci-fi book.

Perception of Beauty: What Woman Will Do To Achieve It

Starting at a young age, girls dream about growing up to be beautiful. As children we are taught that beauty and perfection are things to strive for, and to stop at nothing to achieve. Girls in modern society have grown up around a very sexualized idea of what beauty is. The idea that perfection is beauty, has been embedded in the mind of girls for years. But who is to say what is beauty, and what is perfection? It is clear that there is a stereotype around the image of beauty and perfection, and throughout the years we see the extremes woman will go to, to achieve this image.

From the time we are kids, girls have an idea of what is "beauty". Most little girls will tell you that when they grow up, they want to be a ballerina because they are beautiful and elegant. Girls are taught that a ballerina is the height of beauty, they are beautiful, skinny, and can move with the utmost grace and make it look effortless.
Many girls and even woman dream of being able to become a ballerina. The photograph on the left shows the bare foot of a professional ballerina compared to the foot that everyone else sees. While everyone sees the beauty in a ballerina, most do not understand what professional ballerinas themselves through to achieve this. Ballerinas will destroy their feet and bodies to perfect their dance. This photograph uses a plain white background and placed the main focus, the feet of the ballerina, in the center so the audience has nothing else to look at but the bloodied and blister covered foot contrasted by the perfection of the other foot. This proves that women will destroy their own bodies to try and achieve the idea of perfection and beauty

anorexia pic.pngIn the same way that a ballerina will destroy her feet for the price of the dance, some girls and women will harm their bodies and risk their health to maintain this ideal beauty. This image depicts a girl who is obviously suffering from an eating disorder.  The measuring tape in her mouth and hands symbolizes the problem she has with her weight. Now a days, girls are brought up in a society obsessed with weight. People are expected to be fit and skinny, but this can cause people to develop eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia because they feel their weight is not acceptable. This image placed the girl in the foreground to make you feel closer to her, to allow you to see her pain. It uses neutral colors, like black, grey and white, to express how she feels about herself and to give the image a much darker feel to it. Eating disorders are very dangerous to ones health, however, women will still risk their own health in the hope of becoming an acceptable weight in today’s society and be seen as beautiful.

Most little girls are given barbie dolls as toys when they are younger. Barbies seem innocent, they’re pretty dolls that are fun to play with, however they also teach girls an idea of what beauty and perfection should look like. Many women undergo plastic surgery to give themselves better features. In the image, left, you can see that Valeria Lukyanova has tried to make herself a real live barbie doll. Valeria has gone through multiple cosmetic surgeries, including removing some of her ribs, to alter her appearance to more resemble that of a barbie doll. In the image Valeria is holding a Barbie doll next to her face to show the similarities of their features. This proves that women will go as far as mutilating and distorting their own bodies in the hopes of becoming a more ideal version of beauty and perfection in today’s society .

Michael Jordan: The Best To Ever Play The Game
mj fluu game.jpg                                                                              Michael Jordan always pushed himself. Through every situation, no matter what the circumstances he always gave 110% of his effort into every game, practice, and moment. This photo is a great representation of a moment where he did not give up and he pushed through. The background is blurred but Michael in the foreground is not. He is clear and the light shines off him and his teammates showing that he is the star. Every light is on him, he is in the spotlight and thats how everyone saw it. The cameraman who is also in the foreground is capturing this moment as Michael makes history putting up a 30+ point game while pushing through a sickness. In 1997, in game five of the Chicago Bulls versus the Utah Jazz Michael was experiencing flu-like symptoms and was eventually diagnosed with a stomach flu. He had a 103-degree fever, but still suited up for the game. This photo is portraying Michael’s teammate Scottie Pippen, needing to assist Michael off the court during a timeout because he is so drained from leaving it all out there on the court. Michael Jordan being the high level player he was, knew that his team heavily relied on him to produce, so he gave it literally everything he had in him while he was on the court and rested during time outs as it can be seen in this photo. Michael went on to produce a 38 point game that night, and won his fifth NBA Championship title two days later.

mj free throw dunk.jpg
Michael never failed to impress. It could honestly be said that every time michael stepped on the court he put on a show. He would sometimes do things that no one had ever seen before. Was truly a sight to see, he sold out games every night. This is one reason why he is the best to ever play the game, he always gave a reason to come back to another event. This is one of the biggest moment in not only Michael’s life but NBA history. This night he did something so incredible that no one had ever seen before, and has been a historic moment for everyone since. On this night in 1988, during the slam dunk contest in Chicago Stadium, Michael surprised everyone with his dunk. He took off from the free throw line, 15 feet away, and dunked the basketball. This dunk allowed him to surpass Dominique Wilkins, winning the contest and defeating a player who beat him 3 years prior. The outline his body made during this dunk later became the symbol for his ‘Jordan’ brand and his career took off. To this day that symbol is now worth over a billion dollars. This shows how Michael was always showing the crowd something spectacular and this allowed him to seek the top of popularity charts. He had done some things in his career no one had seen before, things that most NBA players still can not do. If you look in the audience you can see every single person, with the exception of a couple camera men, are looking up at him, you can see all the faces watch him as he sores through the air which proves that he always showed people something they wanted to see because everyone is looking. The light shines off his sweaty skin, as if he is glowing like star he is. Michael is in the foreground and the center of attention like he always proved he should be.

mj layup thru 3 ppl.jpgMichael Jordan could walk the walk but he also had the courage to talk the talk too. Michael had an immense amount of talent but talent will only take you so far. You need to have work ethic and confidence. Some would debate that confidence is more than 50 percent of basketball. Michael Jordan never back down from anyone  or anything. He rose to every occasion and that was a key to his success. This photo shows Michael Jordan attempting an acrobatic layup through three defenders. Not many players have the confidence to attempt something like this or the “go ahead” from their coach to even be allowed to attempt something like this. But, Michael was so highly respected from teammates and coaches that he was able to be trusted with a shot like this. Throw that together with skill and confidence and that creates an elite player which he was. Once again the background with the audience is blurred and Michael is in the middle of three guys showing he is again the “center” of attention, a superstar. The defenders worried and cringed faces, show how Michael was too much too handle, and he was because of his stacked arsenal. Michael's face looks determined and warrior- like as he fights through three defenders to attempt a layup which he completes. This is all a result of his confidents and skill. He had confidence to back up his skill and that took him to levels most players dream to be on. Michael Jordan is the best player to ever play the game of basketball and its moments like this that prove it.

Michael Jordan Trophy.jpg
The name Michael Jordan is too deep to comprehend. Just like any other human being he struggled in life. His father was murdered during his career in the NBA, he had sicknesses and failures. But, because of his great character traits mentioned above he surpassed everyone and everything above him holding him back. This photo was taken after Michael won his first NBA championship with the Chicago bulls. He did not stop after this, once he tasted success he wanted it more and more, so he worked harder to get it again. His incredible work habits led to his success and he ended his career with six championships. His continuous work led to his success, and his continuous success led to his rank. He is one of few NBA players with six championship rings and he has bragging rights for that. The flash of light seen beaming off his trophy shows the significance of what he worked toward. That glow in his reward that he hugs is his pride and it is what all NBA players want but not all get to claim. It can almost be seen as a metaphor, the trophy he holds is shining and glowing because that influenced him to want to win more, the trophy is his bright future. He is a legend because of his accomplishments which started with this.

In essence Michael Jordan is one of, if not the best player to ever step foot on a court. He always gave it 100% effort, fought through all moments, had the most confidence out of everyone and always impressed when he had the chance it is for these reasons why he had success and his success is why he is superior to all players.

Prison of Technology

We now live in a technology-driven world, where our lives can’t be run without these machines. Almost everyone in a typical society has access to television or the internet. We rely on technology for many things and it has easily taken over our lives. These devices are a negative influence on us because they separate individuals from reality. It is clear that people become brainwashed in today’s generation of technology, having a negative effect on many. During the course of our lives some people have lost the value of nature, reality and face-to-face communication, through technology.

The image (right) portrays a man sitting on his couch with a speech bubble above his head stating, “Nothing really interesting today on Tv…” meanwhile outside his window there is a beautiful sunset, mountains and trees. Inside his home it is black and white and outside it is colourful, showing how this man has completely separated himself from reality and doesn’t even acknowledge the beauty of nature because he is so wrapped up in what is on his television. This man in the image has isolated himself from infinite opportunities outside of his living room because of technology.

This photograph (right) is the inside of an iPhone drawn as a prison. When in a prison, people are taken away from the real world and are trapped. The jail demonstrates how we are trapped in this world of social media. By being trapped in the world of social media we are away from reality, unable to view what is really going on, outside of what's on our phones. In the image the colours are dull and the phone is small showing how we are trapped in the prison of technology, separated from this big, bright world that we live in and have chosen to ignore.

Face-to-face communication is important in maintaining healthy relationships in life. This image (right) displays a young couple embracing but looking on their phones over each others shoulder. It seems as though face-to-face communication has become difficult for this couple because they are so used to using their cellular devices. The couples have blank expressions on their face demonstrating that even though they are in each others arms they are more interested in their phones and find more comfort there.

Technology can be extremely useful, but also has many negative aspects. It can affect our relationships and how we view nature and reality. These devices remove so many people from the real world, making some blind to what's more important such as, what's outside of our homes, or outside of our phones.
