What Have I Learned About Culture While Studying The Kite Runner?

While studying The Kite Runner I have learned a lot about the different culture in Afghanistan. While reading The Kite Runner I learned about Pashtuns and Hazaras. Pashtuns generally live in Afghanistan and northwestern and western parts of Pakistan. Hazaras also live in Afghanistan, and Iran. Culture is shown throughout this novel in many different areas. It is shown that women have no say in situations that affect their lives when Amir sends Baba to ask General Taheri if he can marry Soraya, and Soraya has no say in whether she would like to marry Amir or not. When the Taliban come into Kabul, they changed the way that the town was run. They stoned men and women to death for adultery, men were not allowed to cut their hair, resulting in long beards, and men wearing turbans. They also pay to take little girls and boys from orphanages, and they rarely come back. The orphanage owner does not do anything to stop this from happening because with the money the Taliban gives in exchange for the kids, the owner is able to buy the other children in the orphanage food. The culture in Afghanistan is very different from the culture here and many other places, but learning about this has helped me understand what other people are going through around the world.
