Misery is not beautiful: The truth about animal testing

Animal testing is often used to test out new cosmetic products or the ingredients within the product to ensure that it is safe for humans and to test out the effects it has on the animals. The results of the test on animals helps to indicate the side effects the product may have on humans. This is an extreme measure that is unnecessarily cruel and inhumane as many animals are losing their lives and being maltreated, as well as it provides unreliable results which becomes an overall waste of money.

The picture shown is a prime example that the scientists do not care about the animals and are inhumane. In this picture the rabbit has just undergone a test and is now in recovery. It is clear that something has  happened to the rabbit as his fur is matted and bloody. Instead of the rabbit being placed in a clean cage for recovery he is back with multiple other rabbits in a small rusty cage where the risk of infection is high.  After forcing these poor innocent animals into surgeries and tests they do not even have the decency to allow them to rest somewhere clean and in isolation where there is less of a chance they could get an infection and/or get further injuries. This shows the little compassion and respect they have towards the animals.

Scientists go to great lengths to test out new products, which after many unsuccessful projects it becomes extreme and the success rate is very low. Within the chart to the left the success rate is significantly lower than the failed projects. There are many factors while the animals undergo testing that can alter the test results. First of all the animals digestive tract and immune system is slightly different. Although the animals already have different immune systems scientists will change the animals system so that its susceptible to picking up the diseases they want to test different drugs for. The right half of the picture shows that it is unreliable due to the fact that even though it was tested on animals it still failed as a product for humans. This is inhumane and cruel because animal testing is not mandatory. They test the cosmetics on the animals and torture them for no reason because in the end it’s possible to fail and the animals have lost their lives.

More Than $16 Billion in Taxpayer Money Wasted Annually on Animal Testing." PETA. 2015. Web. 13 Jan. 2015.
Due to the large decline in the success of the projects it causes a lot of money to be wasted. Animal testing is a very expensive project. It has a low success rate and so much gets wasted throughout the process. If the product is unsuccessful in the testing process than its wasted money because they will not put the product on the market therefore they are not making any money. Instead of continuing to spend money on this type of testing, the companies could be spending more on  trying to find new ways to test that are more humane. For example the scientist in the photograph is holding up a piece of artificial skin that they can test chemicals on instead of animals. This is a much more compassionate and less extreme measure. The second picture shown demonstrates the $16 billion dollars that taxpayers pay to cover animal testing costs. The taxpayers are paying for these tests to continue running whether they know it or not.
.
In conclusion,  animal testing is a severe measure that is a malicious and cruel. Animals are losing their lives and being maltreated. It provides inconclusive results which becomes a waste of money and time.  By eliminating animal testing we stop innocent animals from being killed and we begin to use the money to find more efficient and safe ways to test.

  1. This topic reminds me of my topic so I definitely agree with your views on animal testing. The picture of the rabbit behind bars and suffering from multiple open wounds really shows how much the scientists don't care about the rabbit. They just see it as a disposable necessity for their experiments, not as a living creature. You made the right choice of choosing such a sad picture of a normally cute and happy creature. It really questions the morals of industries like these. I'm surprised how many fails their are when testing cosmetics. In your second picture of the diagrams I find it really disturbing how scientists actually change the animals immune system for a medicine that probably won't even work. Its so cruel that so many animals die, but it ends up turning out that the medicine or cosmetic isn't even usable for humans. I really wonder if it should be law that scientists should just use the artificial skin in your third picture. Do they use animals because its cheaper or because their are no reliable alternatives? I'm surprised that tax payers are paying for these tests, and even more surprised how much money they pay. Is this statistic for Canada alone or all of North America? If you really want a pick me up I suggest you watch the youtube video of lab chimps being released into a rescue park after being tested for forty years.

  2. I am a huge animal lover and have always been against animal testing and definitely agree with your post. Your first photo was such a good photo to put in because even though gruesome, it truly shows the reality and cruelty that goes on in animal testing. Do you believe that the people that test on animals should receive some sort of punishment for treating them like this? In my opinion yes they should because to me, the people that are okay with treating animals like this have something wrong with them. I think that some people may be able to do this because they don't know the damage and pain they are causing because animals do not have a voice, but that still doesn't make it okay. Your second and last photos are great because they show how successful animal testing really is and how much money is wasted on such a cruel practice. If it has been so unsuccessful then why haven't they done something about it, instead of continuing to test on them. Hopefully they spread that artificial skin to all places that test on animals and it comes to a stop. Loved this post, really got me thinking about how terrible animal testing is and how important it is for people to know what is really goes on.
