Firstly, in the show Family Guy, Peter is shown abusing his daughter Meg. In the scene that this occurs, Peter sees his daughter and at first glance thinks that she is a burglar, but shortly after realizing that she is not, he still proceeds to hit her with a baseball bat. The purpose of the scene is for the audience to enjoy it and laugh with the characters, and at the abuse that is being shown. Abuse here is being shown in a very comedic manner, making it look funny that Meg is being hit by her father, but Peter is abusing his daughter with a weapon. Abuse should never be shown in this manner, with a woman feeling helpless against a man putting her through this and a man being seen as the superior gender. In the picture shown below, Meg is shown powerless against her father's violence. A young woman here is being shown as the inferior, when she is truly no different from the man abusing her.
Secondly, in the video shown below, Ray Rice, a professional football player is shown beating his then fiancée, now wife, in an elevator and then dragging her unconscious body out. Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for his actions, and was released by the Baltimore Ravens, the team he played for. The video shows the couple getting into the elevator together, and once the doors close, she is hit by him multiple times, and attempts to fight back but is knocked out unconscious. Palmer, Rices fiancée, shows an effort to fight her own battle, but is unable to once hit numerous times, and knocked out. The media portrays this act of violence as not very important, only originally getting a 2 game suspension, when he should have been kicked off the team as soon as the NFL found out about the violence. Palmer attempted to take matters into her own hands by fighting back, but was unable to, she stood up for herself against a man who was able to hurt her in a way that no woman, or anyone, should ever be hurt in.

Lastly, in my final picture, a woman is shown behind bars, this symbolizes that her home is simply a prison cell where she is unable to do what she wants, and is simply being hurt and scared in her own home. The woman's tears in the photo show that she is scared of where she is, and that she wants to get out, but is powerless in her prison. A woman here is shown scared of what she has been, and is being put through when she should be feeling safe in her home, but is unable to. She never truly knows what she could be coming home to, or who is coming home to her.
In conclusion, abuse against women is shown in many different ways in the media, some of these including comedy. Abuse is a serious matter and should be taken much more seriously than it is.

This post was definitely one of my favourites because I think the topic is such an important issue that needs to be addressed. I think the first photo you put in your post is perfect for the point you are trying to get across, because it shows something so degrading in a show that I'm sure almost everyone has seen or heard of, crazy to think something like this would even be allowed on television especially in a comedic way. I also think the video was a great touch. Do you think Ray Rice only received a 2 game suspension, getting off easy because he is in the NFL? In my opinion, someone less famous would receive different, more life changing punishments for doing something like that. The last photo I agree with as well.. no woman should ever feel uncomfortable or unsafe in the home that they live in. Amazing post, loved it!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your thoughts on my photos and videos, and agree with what you had to say about Ray Rice. If he were not famous, and not in the media as he is, I believe that he may have gotten jail time for his actions against his fiancee. She is no longer able to feel safe around him, even though she chose to still marry him, she still has to fear him everyday.
